Remnant

2021, An Extended Study

Shadows, Traces and Reflections.

Remnant starts off as an exploration of transience and movement which then transforms into a study of life and the line at which people decide to draw an end to it.

ONE : “An Introduction”

An Excerpt from the notebook "As an initial stimulus, the word ‘remnant’ connotes to remains, leftovers and traces. This notion tied with the element of the human body, thought and soul lends itself to an eerie and almost ghostly sight. This is the reasoning to why I elected to start off this project with that of more abstract imagery like that of a movement captured in a long exposure.

TWO : “Casted Shadows”

An Excerpt from the notebook “After initial studies, I wanted to progress on with more legible forms and figures and will be studying that of human shadows both casted and in silhouette and also wanted to start introducing color into this. I wanted to portray silhouettes of people casted with a warmer toned light behind them. The purpose of this is that even if the forms seem ghostly and uninviting, the warm tint would go ahead and somewhat neutralise that.”

THREE : “Trails after Light”

An Excerpt from the notebook “Longing for nothingness, figures are lit up in the midst of night on the edge of the street. A bus stop when the bus stops running at night equates to as much being a casted shadow of infrastructure from a time of day- a remnant of life and vivacious happenings. Strides of defined pitch black shadows amidst a dark night scene beside the roads once buzzing with life. A scene dimly lit up by a lone street lamp alongside two figures almost fading away into the darkness.”

FOUR : A Reflection

An Excerpt from the notebook “Developing forwards into a similar yet different notion of reflections, I wanted to move subtly into a more open and interpretation based artwork to grasp the abstract concept. This would then help me to propel forwards into more in depth artworks and studies based in human reflections- both in physical and mental forms.”

FIVE : “Condensation”

An Excerpt from the notebook “Moving closer to a final artwork, I wanted to start stripping down the concepts I have explored throughout this extended study to a single core concept. From the formation of earlier studies of remnant to now having developed work relating to movement, shadows and reflections in correlation to human sentiment, I found that exploring themes of both literally leaving and leaving things behind has been really intriguing for me.”
